Return to Important Bryophyte Habitats

7. Vine Maple Stems

Vine maple, Acer circinatum, is the most desired source of "floral" moss, because it has much less debris than mosses gathered off the forest floor. The moss mats are best developed in the riparian zone, including ravines, under old growth canopy. Not included among the 100 prominent mosses is Pseudoleskea stenophylla, characteristic of vine maple stems in upland, open, moist thickets.
